Sanctuary City wil de notie van het begrip sanctuary binnen de stedelijke omgeving onderzoeken. Als gebruiker van deze ruimte wordt de stedeling geconfronteerd met een overweldigende hoeveelheid informatie,communicatie en activiteit. Deze onderdompeling in de weeën van de stad wordt door menigeen als een gegeven beschouwd. Echter, het leidt ook tot de behoefte om momenten te creëren of te ervaren waarbij men een ander, meer sensibel, bewustzijn kan bereiken. Waar je je op een ander niveau bewust wordt van de relatie tussende stad en jezelf. Deze ervaringen kunnen verbonden zijn met specifieke locaties in de stad, zoals bijvoorbeeld een park of brug, maar ze kunnen ook gerelateerd zijn aan bepaalde rituelen zoals je dagelijkse koffie in je lokale koffiehuis.

Sanctuary City wants to investigate the notion of sanctuary within the realm of the urban environment. As a user of this space the 'urbanite' is confronted by an overwhelming amount of communication, information and action. This submergence in the throes of the city is accepted by many as a given fact. However it leads to a need to create or experience moments whereby one can attain a heightened sense of awareness.
Where one becomes aware of the city and oneself
on another level. These moments can be linked to specific locations within a city, such as a park, or they can be connected to certain rituals such as having your daily morning coffee at your local coffeebar.

They can be either of a physical or mental nature. What all these moments have in common is that they allow one to communicate with the city on a more intense and individual level. These moments are what SC is choosing to label 'sanctuary'. And your particular sanctuaries are where SC's
interest lies.
